Kari me Stretchy wrap - newborn essentials

There are millions of  newborn essential lists scattered online, in books and in every baby & parenting magazine your likely to read. Some your definitely going to need like nappies & wipes but others, like a top & tail bowl, expensive bottle prep machine or travel dummy steriliser are more of an individual preference than an essential. Everyone has their own little list of things they just couldn't do without in the newborn days and since we are well and truly over the newborn stage with baby boy turning the big ONE this weekend, I've decided to do a series of posts about my essentials that aided us to sail thankfully pretty smoothly through the newborn stage!

Stretchy wraps!
I was introduced to stretchy wraps (a stretch fabric wrap to carry newborns- 4 months approx) 5 years ago when our gorgeous girl was born, by a very knowledgeable friend who was carrying her newborn youngest. I'll admit, on first glance I thought no way, there is not a chance I am wrapping meters of stretchy fabric around me and my baby! However after trying it once I was a convert! I had my hands back! Baby was snuggly, beside mummy just as she wanted and I could get on with daily life, with her close at all times. Win win! I bought a kari-me black stretchy wrap and its the same wrap I kept and used again with baby boy when he arrived last February.

Since then I've introduced a number of friends to babywearing because it' just so bluming handy! But if you don't have that "babywearing" friend and are interested,  a local babywearing sling group or library is a good place to start, as the members are so knowledgeable they will be able to demonstrate carriers, help you get a good fit for you and baby, show you how to use them safely and many groups hire out carriers. Which is a fantastic option before committing to purchase one! The sling library Northern Ireland runs meets locally here as well as a few other groups. But if your not on the wee emerald isle have a little google search and see if there are any sling libraries in your local area.
There are also amazing bloggers and vloggers like Wrap you in love  who have great tutorials , showing you step by step how to carry your little ones in a variety of carriers, so worth a little look if your interested.
There are lots of brands of stretchy wraps out there, some great, some less so (i'd avoid ebay cheapy type wraps as these tend to be not as stretchy material and poorer quality) again its about personal preference. Personally I love the kari-me having tried out a number of others I found this has worn well over the years, been used by three kids so far, my two and a friends,  and washes easily (pop in normal wash and I just popped into tumbler), pretty hassle free! .

Using a stretchy wrap made everything so much easier in the newborn days, I was able to hold our big girl's hand out for walks still whilst carrying baby boy. Likewise at home having him in the wrap meant I had my hands free for her, to help her with her puzzles or play with that toy. It just seemed to make my transition from a mum of one to a mum of two so much easier. I also found it so easy to get out with the family for walks to the beach and places like silent valley that just are not that easy to navigate with a pram. Side note, having babies upright can aid issues like colic and reflux which thankfully we didn't have, but it's something worth mentioning as it can really help if your having these issues! I can just not recommend it highly enough, just give it a go!
